  • Population is over 238 million people, over half live on the island of Java
  • Jakarta is the capital with a population of 20 million people

  • Over 17,500 islands in the archipelago of Indonesia

  • It has the worlds longest coastline at 54,370 kilometres
  • Marco Polo was the first European to arrive, in 1292, followed by the Portugese in 1509, and the Dutch at the end of the 16th The republic of Indonesia was declared in 1945
  • A succession of dictatorships led by military leaders ended in 1998 and the country is now ruled by a democratically elected Government
  • There are only two seasons – wet and Dry – July to September is the dry season
